Joshua 9
Living by Faith
It’s easy to make foolish decisions when we rely on our own judgment rather than prayerfully reflecting on God word. This is the issue in Joshua 9, with the story of the Gibeonite deception. This sermon looks at the disaster of living by sight, the difficulty of living by faith, and the triumph of God’s grace—even over our mistakes.
Joshua 8:30-35
Renewal
After all the action at Jericho and Ai, in Joshua 8:30-35 the people pause to worship the Lord and renew their commitment to Him. Here we learn the central role God's word plays in worship.
Joshua 8:1-29
Reassurance
The first battle at Ai was a disaster because of Achan's sin. In Joshua 8 God proves his faithfulness, goodness and justice to his people, through the reassurance of his victory-giving presence.
Joshua 6:6-27
The Conquest
Some elements of the destruction of Jericho deeply trouble modern readers. But if we consider the Bible's perspective on the conquest we learn some extremely important lessons that take us to the heart of the gospel.
Joshua 5:13-6:5
The Commander
A mysterious figure confronts Joshua with a drawn sword – this is the commander of the army of the Lord! He comes to remind Joshua (and us) who really is in charge. This sermon considers his identity, our allegiance to him and the assurance he gives.
Joshua 5:1-12
Celebrating the Sacraments
This passage describes a turning point in the life of God’s people. The wilderness wandering caused by unbelief and disobedience is finally over. God has raised up a new generation and reconstituted his covenant with them, and they embrace the signs of their covenant relationship. In this way we learn a lot about a covenant relationship with God and the role of covenant signs in that relationship.
