Feeding the 5000
The night before Jesus was betrayed he was in an agony so deep that as he prayed earnestly he sweat drops of blood (Luke 22:44). Was it the prospect of physical torture that drove Christ to this agony? Was he scared of death? No. It was something far worse—something Jesus calls a “cup”: “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” What is this cup that distressed Jesus so much?
